Provinces and territories of Canada

The province of Manitoba got its name from the lake of the same name, which, in turn, was named so by the peoples of the "first nations" of Canada who lived on these lands. According to one version, the name of the lake means in the Cree and Ojibwe languages "the straits of the great spirit of Manitu" (meaning the gorge between the southern and northern parts of the lake), according to the other, in the Assiniboin language it means "Lake of the Prairies" (by the way, just like that, " A prairie lake ", called Manitoba and French pioneers).
